TWU/FOA 2nd Annual Golf Tournament a succes

The Texas Woman’s University Pioneer Gymnastics program and Friends of Achievers held their second annual combined fund raising golf tournament with a 4-player team scramble format Monday, Columbus Day, Oct. 13, at The Golf Club at Champions Circle (formerly Doral Tesoro) in north Ft. Worth.

The proceeds from the tournament will be shared between the TWU Gymnastics program and Friends of Achievers which is the booster club supporting member gymnasts of Achievers Gymnastics.

The tournament action began with perfect weather to golf with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and concluded with an awards luncheon after the completion of play in the clubhouse dining room.

The Midway Baptist Church team of Jim Morgan, Brad Wilkerson, Grant Guthrie, and Kenny Guthrie shot a net score of 58 to win the tournament by one stroke over the second place The Colony Gymnastics team of David Lewis, Scott Taylor, Han Cha, and Calvin Forbes.

Third place was won by the PointBank team of Deke Alexander, Rodney Baker, Jonathon David, and James Monaco, with a net score of 61. The defending champion PointBank team won the 2007 inaugural tournament.

The closest to the hole contests were won by Abel Losoya on hole No. 5 and on hole No. 12 by Brad Wilkerson.
The longest drive of the tournament contest on hole No. 18 was won by Scott Crouse.

Members of the TWU Gymnastics team assisted golfers by carrying their golf bags from their vehicles in the parking lot to the cart staging area behind the clubhouse and then loading them on the players designated carts.

TWU gymnast Brittany Parker, while adjusting a golfer’s bag strap over her shoulder as she walked to the carts said, “The guy said this should be easy for me to carry because it’s light.” She laughed and added, “This thing must weigh fifty pounds!”

Some of the golfers were playing the Golf Club at Champions Circle for the first time. After finishing their round many of them commented favorably about the unique layout of the course and being anxious to play it again soon.

Frank Kudlac, TWU Gymnastics coach and owner of Achievers Gymnastics Center in Denton at the end of the awards luncheon said, “This is our second annual tournament and last year we raised over $8,000 and I think it will be about that [amount] this year as well.”

A news brief released by TWU Gymnastics on Wednesday, Oct. 15, states that the tournament raised more than $10,000 for the organizations.

The premier hole sponsors for this tournament were Groggy Dog Sportswear, Achievers Gymnastics, Frenchy’s Lawn and Tree Service, the Denton Record-Chronicle, James Wood Auto Park, and Elk River Real Estate.

Friends of Achievers President and owner of Groggy Dog Sportswear in Denton, Craig Jones said, “The funds raised from this tournament held in conjunction with Texas Woman’s University Gymnastics are used to help with travel expenses for our optional competitive team of twelve girls that travel [to meets] across the country.”

“The TWU Gymnastics program will use the funds for scholarships, assisting with travel expenses, and purchasing equipment,” Kudlac said.

He added, “It was a great day of golf for two great causes – the TWU Gymnastics program and the Friends of Achievers. I want to thank all of our golfers and all of our sponsors for helping to make this possible.”
